The Tastiest Year Yet: Neighbourhood's 2023 Recap

What a year it has been for Neighbourhood Kitchen. As we prepare for another exciting year of culinary masterpieces, it’s only right we take a look at all the amazing traders and menus we have had in 2023. From camembert, to lobster, Veganuary to tacos and everything in between, it has been an absolutely mouth-watering year with a bunch of the some of the best street food traders Wales has to offer. Our loyal customers and local food lovers have been an absolute pleasure to serve and we can’t wait to see you all back for 2024!

Let's take a look at the year we’ve had:

Herbivore

What a better way to kick off the year than with delicious, healthy, flavourful VEGAN dishes! Everything you need and more to start your health-kick in the new year. No need to compromise on tastiness as Herbivore makes the most delicious small dishes which burst with flavours and spices. Who said veggies had to be boring? Simon did an excellent job and took Cardiff by storm as customers were flooding in all through the month.

Neighbourhood Burgers

This time bringing the cooking in-house, Neighbourhood launched their own burger menu. With a selection of hand-crafted burgers to suit everyone, using the finest cut chuck mince, buttermilk fried chicken and plant-based patties, they were stacked full of different toppings and flavours and were an absolute hit! They even had custom baked Neighbourhood branded buns!

As burgers and rugby go hand-in-hand, it was ideal that the six nations were on at the same time. So many fans enjoyed a mouth-watering Neighbourhood burger before watching the matches. What a great day!

Taco Del Barrio

Bringing a Mexican fiesta to Neighbourhood, Taco Del Barrio smashed it with a selection of flavourful tacos, tasty margaritas and banging sides. They even turned their whole menu gluten free so no-one had to miss out on the feast!  The people of Cardiff loved them, and so did we!

Pasta al Sugo

Serving handmade pasta, mouthwatering arancini balls and juicy Italian subs throughout April, Pasta Al Sugo really brought the amazing taste of Italy to Neighbourhood! With classics like the linguine carbonara or new dishes like the nduja ragu dog, they really covered all areas and offered an amazing menu!

Music May

Getting the summer vibes started, Music May was a mix of great artists, banging food and immaculate vibes! Each week a new trader and artist took over Neighbourhood to showcase their food and tunes. We saw some great collabs:

Banh mi x Sarnie Club menu partnered with the amazing Got Some, who brang the vibes with a great house and bass playlist, with the top tier Vietnamese sandwiches on offer.

Jollof House Party with Skunk Adelic, cooking up the best Nigerian street food along with a sick live DJ set with a mixture of afrobeats, hip hop, funk and soul. From Glastonbury Festival to Neighbourhood - he really brought the party.

The Real Ting and Bad Lion Sound System bought the vibes from Jamaican as Albert, the main man cooked up his popular Jamaican soul food, which went perfectly with his reggae and dancehall set which got the party going.

Tierra Tacos also took the stage with their signature big flavours and delectable Mexican dishes.

The Crawfish Boil

Who knew Cardiff had so many crustaceans lovers? Everyone couldn't wait to get their claws stuck into an authentic Louisiana style crawfish boil, with succulent crawfish, smokey sausage, juicy corn, tasty prawns and potatoes all doused in Bob's cajun rub and chucked onto the newspaper, Southern style.

The perfect meal to use your hands and get stuck in, and you guys loved it! We couldn't stop there…The annual Big Crawfish Boil was back at Tramshed for round 2 for the ultimate crawfish feast. What a day it was too, full of foodie fanatics, a huge feast of crawfish boil and southern sides, live music and flowing drinks. A summer's day well spent!

Mama Tiger

Adding a little spice to Neighbourhood, we have Mama Tiger who were serving their deliciously crafted, authentic Kolkatan food in Indian tiffin carriers. Being the new kids on the block in Cardiff’s food scene, they definitely made their place;  their curries and street food bites really got the taste buds tingling and truly showcased the delights of their magnificent cuisine.

Smoke and Embers

These Welsh legends brought top tier BBQ food to the kitchen, with mouth watering meats and perfectly paired sides. The pork belly burnt ends were to die for, glazed in a sticky sauce in a soft pretzel bun. Keep an eye out for these guys, they’re definitely not ones to miss.

£10 Lobster Menu

Need we say anything? The £10 lobster menu popped off! Selling out in record time, this feast was definitely a hit with the foodie lovers in Cardiff. So much so, the menu was extended for an extra 2 weeks…which also sold out! We don’t blame you, where else can you get a lobster for £10 which you can then upgrade and accompany with perfectly paired sides? The feedback on this menu was overwhelmingly great, it’s fair to say Cardiff loves a crustacean!

Mwg

Mwg made its debut and oh boy, we are glad they did! Bringing together Welsh food from land and sea and cooking it over an open charcoal fire. The passion project was a  creation of two best mates Tudor and Alex and a shared love for welsh produce, cooking and hospitality. They curated a menu of flavoursome small dishes with fresh ingredients and local produce. We can’t wait to see whether this venture goes!

Camembert Bar

Last, and definitely not least…the renowned Camembert Bar! Bringing the cheese lovers exactly what they wanted and needed in the festive season, a cheesy banquet! After a sellout the previous year, it was only right to bring it back, for an extended amount of time so everyone could indulge in gooey camembert, sumptuous toppings and naughty sides! It was a great way to round up the year and finish 2023 on a high!

We have loved every second of 2023 in Neighbourhood and love to see all our customers, new and old, enjoying the street food we bring to Cardiff. Of course, there is plenty more where that came from in 2024 and we can’t wait to show you what’s in store! Keep your eyes peeled for updates and we hope to see you all very soon!

Mwg's Upcoming Journey - The Newest Wonder in Wales

Mwg's Upcoming Journey - The Newest Wonder in Wales

Mwg (pronounced moog), is the new kid on the block in Cardiff’s food scene. It brings together Welsh delicacies from land and sea and cooks them over charcoal. Mwg is a custom built barbecue grill and open-fire plancha, which creates a unique and flavourful cooking experience, with a focus on Welsh produce. They champion simple Welsh ingredients and create a selection of gourmet small dishes with rich flavours and fresh, seasonal produce.

This culinary journey was born on a foundation of solid friendship and shared passions between two best mates, Tudor and Alex. The inspiration behind the creation of Mwg came from a trip they spent together along the Welsh coast, where they got to appreciate the nation’s beauty coupled with the deep love for Welsh produce, cooking and hospitality. They embarked on a journey to celebrate the essence of Wales through local ingredients and suppliers, with a strong focus dedicated to authenticity and quality. Keeping it in the family, Alex’s brother in law owns Cwm Kits Farm, located just a stone’s throw from Cardiff, who are the exclusive artisan supplier of all the Welsh lamb, who ensure the use of well-treated, free range animals to be used in the dishes.

When asked why local produce is such an important aspect to Mwg, Tudor and Alex responded saying “we pride ourselves in the abundance of Welsh produce available right on our doorstep, it’s got to be some of the best in the world!’. They endeavour to use local produce wherever possible in their seasonal dishes, to showcase the authenticity and the essence of the wonderful Wales.

In terms of the backgrounds of the faces behind the business, you are in safe hands. Tudor has 18 years hospitality experience, so he knows all the ins and outs of the industry, firstly in music event production, before entering the world of food events in 2011. Now running a series of successful street food festivals across the UK, owning a restaurant, and a keen home cook and food lover himself , he has a taste for great ideas and knows his way around the kitchen after kick starting his cooking journey in November 2022.

Looking to the future for Mwg, the opportunities are endless. With it being a passion project for Alex and Tudor, they are excited to see what the future holds – who knows what that will be! Check out their instagram @mwgcardiff to be the first to hear about their next exciting ventures and enquire about their catering possibilities. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming opportunities to get your hands on the wonderful Mwg!

Fully Booked in Record Time - Cardiff’s £10 Lobster Menu

Fully Booked in Record Time - Cardiff’s £10 Lobster Menu

After a cracking summer of crustaceans, it has sadly come to an end for the £10 lobster menu. It took Cardiff by storm, selling out in a snap of a claw, which meant, of course we had to extend it for a further two weeks so that everyone could get their lobster fix! With six weeks fully booked up by lobster lovers, some might say it was a claw-some success.

1,180 Lobsters Sold

1,551 Covers Served

764 Cocktails Made

Here in the heart of Cardiff, is the small restaurant with big ideas – Neighbourhood Kitchen, where the £10 lobster menu originated. After the big crawfish boil in the summer, we clearly couldn’t get enough of the crustaceans as the new lobster menu was released. You could indulge in a lavish lobster meal for a cracking price that didn’t break the bank – it’s not very often you get those two points in the same sentence! The food lovers of Cardiff clearly liked the idea just as much as we did as it sold out in record time, even needing to be extended.

The menu saw a whole 350g Canadian lobster coated in lashings of garlic and parsley butter as the £10 hit. If you wanted to upgrade your lobster to something a little different, you could tuck into the melt in the mouth lobster thermidor – two halves of a lobster smothered in thermidor sauce and parmesan cheese, or the rich and creamy lobster mac and cheese, or lobster rolls. If you were feeling a bit crabby, you could try the Korean inspired soft shell crab burger , and don’t worry vegans of course we had something for you, the vegan not-so-fishy-fish-finger sandwich, with mushy peas and tartar sauce – a true classic.

The lobster mains were the stars of the show, but what’s a great meal without killer sides? At Neighbourhood they don’t get forgotten about. Our handpicked sides go hand in hand with the mains to create an all round top tier meal. The paprika smoked corn ribs dipped in Brains dark BBQ sauce were a flavour fusion, alongside the whitefish croquettes and kewpie mayo and the nduja and parmesan asparagus. The guests thoroughly enjoyed tucking into a table spread of great plates.

Not only is Neighbourhood an excellent restaurant, but a superb cocktail bar. With the skilled bartenders perfectly pairing cocktails with the lobster menu to elevate the dining experience. Each cocktail was thoughtfully designed to enhance the flavours of each dish. Our signature margarita was a true hit, and you can never have just one!

The £10 lobster menu was thoroughly enjoyed by the customers, staff and chefs. Everyone enjoyed getting stuck right in and having a laugh whilst eating great food. Bibs were on, hair was tied back, and belts were loosened as the lobster lovers of Cardiff tucked into a right ol’ feast. It was definitely an experience and it’s sad to see the tail end of it, but, of course, at Neighbourhood, we always have something else tucked up our sleeve. Check out our instagram, @neighbourhoodcardiff ,for more tasty updates and be the first to know about exciting new menus coming to Neighbourhood Kitchen!

A Look Back Over the September Sarnie Club Collabs

A Look Back Over the September Sarnie Club Collabs

It’s been a delicious and busy month this September for the Sarnie Club, launching hot new specials from the best sandwich creators. Each week a different limited edition killer sandwich has been brought to you, combining your favourite street food traders, and whacking them into a banging’ sarnies.

It kicked off with the highly popular crawfish roll. After amazing feedback from the crawfish boil over summer, it would only be right to bring back an all-time fav to kickstart the September collabs.

Another favourite of ours was the Neighbour X Fire and Flank Sarnie, a combination of succulent 8-hour sous vide steak, spicy chimichurri, and crispy caramelised onions on a toasted crusty roll – the ultimate steak sarnie.

It doesn’t stop there… bringing the taste of India we had the amazing ‘Argy Bhaji’, a crispy roti filled with aromatic onion bhajis, bursting with flavour, accompanied by a sweet and spicy curried pineapple slaw and a fresh raita. A definite highlight of the month!

If you missed out on these killer sandwiches, fear not, as the Sarnie Club will be continuing on with even more big, delicious sandwiches to get your hands on. Check out the menu to see what our current specials are, and keep your eyes peeled for even more bangin’ collabs. We’re excited for what’s to come…!

Neighbourhood's Sarnie Club 1 Month On

Neighbourhood's Sarnie Club 1 Month On

You may have seen our ridiculous sandwiches flooding your socials over the last month, and we’re not even sorry! If you haven’t got yourself down to Neighbourhood in the last month to try out the Sarnie Club, it’s time to change that. Bringing you seasonal goods, our sarnie menu is ever evolving to bring you the perfect grub depending on the weather.

The Sarnie Club was the brainchild of Tudor, the owner of Neighbourhood, who wanted to celebrate his love for decadent, over-filled sandwiches to the people of Cardiff. Thanks to local designer Siôn Meical Jones working on behalf of River & Bear, Tudor’s rough sketch of a sandwich man was turned into the fun and unique Sarnie Club logo, and from there the Sarnie Club was born.

Current specials:

Neighbourhood Kitchen hosts a Louisiana Crawfish Boil!

Neighbourhood Kitchen hosts a Louisiana Crawfish Boil!

At Neighbourhood Kitchen, we will be opening our doors for two weeks to host a good ol’ fashioned Louisiana Crawfish Boil. Originating from South Louisiana, there’s only one way to enjoy a juicy crawfish boil – the Cajun way. Feast upon a table full of fresh crawfish from the British waterways, smothered in Old Bay Cajun Seasoning, served with smoked sausage, red potatoes and corn. This mouth watering dish is a first in Cardiff, so loosen your belt, tie your hair back and come tuck in! If in doubt, pinch the tail and suck the head! Not a crawfish lover? No problem. We’ll be serving up vegan po’boy and cajun fries to cater for all. On top of all of this, we will be curating a selection of Louisiana cocktails to perfectly pair with your food – The Alabamba Slammer, Vieux Carré and Mint Julep to name a few.

Be quick as this feast is only available for 2 weeks! Starting on Wednesday 25th May, the offer will roll until 4th June. Food is served 4pm – 9pm Wednesdays to Saturdays. So make sure you book before it’s gone!
